The Opportunity

Webster Bank’s brand team had produced a series of high-quality video testimonials called The Moment. Real stories from real business owners about pivotal moments in their growth and how Webster showed up for them. A candy maker facing a generational crossroads. An architect outgrowing her space. A manufacturer who needed financing fast before a deal slipped away.

The content was sitting on an external microsite. A pure brand awareness play, produced by an agency, largely disconnected from the bank’s main web presence and the customers actually considering a relationship with Webster.

I saw something different in it.

The Argument

Webster had been a community bank since 1935. By the time I joined, it had grown into a substantial regional institution with serious commercial ambitions. That gap, between large bank scale and local roots, was exactly where customer trust eroded.

The Moments content was built to tell that story. But brand awareness and purchase-funnel resonance are different goals. A business owner watching a two-minute video on a standalone microsite is one thing. That same owner, mid-consideration, landing on a story about a company just like theirs and then clicking directly to a relevant loan product is a different outcome entirely.

I made the case to bring Moments onto the main bank website. There was friction. Brand owned the content. I owned the website. They had built the microsite as their property. Getting them to redirect it required making a business argument, not just a design argument. The thesis was straightforward: we were telling the same story, just trying to achieve different things with it. On the main site, inside the editorial ecosystem my team had built, the content could do both.

They agreed. The microsite redirected to a landing page I designed on websteronline.com.

What I Built

The Moments landing page organized all nine stories in a way that invited browsing without feeling like a product catalog. Each story had its own page built around a content framework I created: Client Background, The Moment, The Response, The Results. That structure had to work across wildly different business types and story lengths. A candy manufacturer, an environmental services firm, a nonprofit cancer foundation. Without feeling forced or formulaic.

The design goal was engagement, not conversion. Draw visitors in with a real human story. Keep their attention through the narrative arc. Then, at the natural end of that story, surface the relevant product. An SBA loan page, a business line of credit, a contact form for a business banker. The Moments pages weren’t sales pages. They were trust pages that earned the right to make a soft ask.

The sketches show how I thought through the page structure before any visual design happened. How to sequence the story, where the video lived, how Client Background and The Moment set context before The Response and Results paid it off.

I also designed a personalized version of the landing page that would surface different Moments based on a visitor’s demonstrated intent. That concept didn’t make it to production when the personalization software contract wasn’t renewed. But the thinking was consistent with everything else we were building. A site that responded to who you were and what you needed, not one that served the same experience to everyone.

Pando - core product infrastructure

Future state concept that never launched, that would pull local banker info for a visitor based on their IP address as well as present a “channel of choice” option for the visitor to contact the bank. Based on customer call center interviews, we knew that customer preferences varied widely – with preferences for contacting the bank a mixture of live chat, call, email or self-service online.
